The mural is up!

It’s up and it’s colorful!
My commissioned mural was installed on the outside of it’s new home last weekend. I’m happy to report that it looked even better than I had hoped. The design the client and I worked out looked beautiful and added a lot of color to the neighborhood. Thank goodness the neighbors like it as well.
Here I am showing off my mural to my mother. If you’re in the neighborhood off East Broadway in Milford, CT, see if you can spy it just off to the side, heading toward Silver Sands State Park. Please contact me at if you are interested in having a mural done for either an interior or exterior placement.

Video review by Victor Vargas’s Daily Bark

Victor Vargas reviewed three of my parent series paintings on his Daily Bark facebook page.
He gives a wonderful recount and explains the compositional elements in each painting, as well as an insightful overview of the nature of my series. Thank you Victor.

A Brazilian Art Adventure and Reunion

I just returned from an epic one week trip to Brazil where I had a reunion with my Brazilian family of ‘five sisters’ and Brazilian ‘mother’ who I stayed with for four months 41(!) years ago in Rio de Janeiro, after I graduated high school. It was an incredible week of reconnecting with my South American sisters who live within a community in the jungle of Minas Gerais, on an eco-reserve they founded called RESERVA DO SAUÁ. Besides growing olive trees, they are committed to returning their land back to the jungle and bringing ecological balance to their corner of the earth. It was quite an experience and timely since it was my father Harold who originally connected me with them. Isabel, who attended my high school to learn english years ago and had my father as an art teacher. She asked him if he knew anyone that wanted to go to Brazil. And sure enough he said, “My daughter would love to go”. This trip was taken in his honor; it was cathartic and beautiful.

I am already making plans to go back and lead an art & eco-travel adventure next summer. The reserve is in a stunningly beautiful location in the hills of Minas Gerais. The community is women-owned and women-run, with emphasis on health, harmony, sustainability and beauty. There are natural mineral springs nearby and their lands adjoins state park land. Stay posted as dates and details for travel come into focus.

Mural Phases – a work in progress

This is an 8′ x 8′ mural painted on four primed 4′ x 4′ panels, to be installed on the outside wall of a house.
I began by outlining the shapes from a smaller print using an overhead projector.
Using my preliminary study to guide me,  I began painting by ‘filling in” the shapes with color around the entire mural rather than completing one area at a time. This way I begin to see rhythms and color relationships develop as I work. Since acrylics usually dry a slightly darker shade than when wet, I need to wait and adjust some areas with a new color mixture, building colors by layering. Check back to track my progress as I add more images daily.

Mural ~ the beginning

This week I am beginning a commissioned 8′ x 8′ mural that will be placed on the side of a house. I will be painting the entire mural indoors on four 4′ x 4′ panels using acrylic paints.
These images chart my process from beginning line drawing to final painted mural to be installed outdoors.

Watercolor summer journal

When I travel my medium of choice is watercolor. The paints are portable and compact and I can carry them easily in my carry-on luggage. It’s been a while since I worked with watercolor so it felt refreshing to paint with them, using them loosely while building up colors with transparent overlays. I worked in a panoramic format since the landscape lent itself to wide views. Indeed, the majority of my photographs were panoramas as well. My travels this summer took me to Iceland and Europe.  Now I can add several new countries to my list of places I’ve been including Iceland, Denmark, Austria, the Czech Republic and a wonderful visit back to my favorite city Amsterdam.
